Oratorical Contest - The winner of the Club's Contest this year is Madison Thomas-Buenos for his speech, given April 3rd on this year's topic, "Why Me? Why Not?"  Congratulations to Madison!  Madison went on to the Zone Contest where he placed 2nd in the boy's contest to Cameron Spence, from the Cumberland Optimist Club.  Zone 2's contest was held April 19th; it was hosted by the Rockville Club at the Rockville Library in Rockville's new Town Square.  Click here to see pictures from Zone 2's Oratorical Contest.

Meetings

The Board Meeting on May 6th was hosted by Virginia and Bert Boline at their home.  Thanks very much for the fine hospitality, Virginia and Bert.  Six members attended and the following items were discussed:

bulletS/T Ed gave the financial report.  In April we ordered the $100 Savings Bond for the winner of our Oratorical Contest, Mr. Madison Thomas-Buenos, and paid Shumsky at www.optimiststuff.com for items ordered for that contest.  We hosted the Zone 2 Oratorical Contest and paid the club's share to send the winners to the District Contest in Ocean City.  We paid our OI and District dues and paid to help sponsor the Rockville Public Safety Awards Program which will be held in June.
bulletPresident Barbara and VP Bruce attended the District's 3rd Quarter Conference i Ocean City and reported on that.
bulletThe Zone 2 Oratorical Contest was reviewed.  All felt it was a success.  The venue at the Rockville Library was good although we had some noise from a High School Cheerleaders competition outside in the Square.  All the speakers were good though it would have been better to have another girl contestant.
bulletThe Club is approved to sell water and soda at the Memorial Day Parade in Rockville on Monday, May 26th.  The Parade route has changed somewhat from previous years so it will go through the new Town Square.  The Club's stands will be at the corners of North Washington and Beall and at Middle Lane and Maryland Ave.  Ed is seeking volunteers to help sell; several members did volunteer but we can use more.
bulletOfficers for next year - Barbara agreed to serve another year as President; thanks very much Barbara.  Ed agreed to serve as Sec./Treas. for yet another year.  Ed will report the Officers Elect to Optimist International by May 20th as required.
bulletThe next Dinner/Social Meeting will be held at Red, Hot and Blue Restaurant on May 20th starting at 6:30 PM.  (Note: The location was changed from the New Fortune Chinese Restaurant to Red, Hot and Blue after the meeting.)
bulletThe next Board Meeting will be a picnic at Barbara and Bruce's home on June 3rd starting at 6:00 PM.

Barbara and Bruce Grewe provided fine hospitality for the Board Meeting at their home on April 1st.  Seven members attended and the following items were discussed:

bulletS/T Ed gave a brief financial report.  He has ordered the $100 Savings Bond for the winner of our Club's Essay Contest, Ms. Sarah Rice, and has paid Shumsky for items ordered for that Contest.  More items have been ordered for the Oratorical Contest and the Club still owes for them.
bulletEd received a call from Colleen at the City of Rockville saying we are good to go for selling water and sodas at this year's Memorial Day Parade in Rockville.  The route of the parade will be somewhat different from previous years so one of our two stands will be relocated.
bulletOur Club's Oratorical Contest will be held as planned on April 3rd at the Courtyard by Marriott on Research Blvd. although we only have one contestant.  Since he automatically will be the winner, this will be an opportunity for him to present his speech in a dry run and for club members to offer constructive suggestions.
bulletThe Club will be hosting the Zone Oratorical Contest on April 19th at the new Rockville Library in Rockville Town Square.  The contest will start at 2:00 PM and we expect at least 5 contestants.  Some details are still to be worked out.
bulletPresident Barbara received a nice e-mail from Gov. Tom thanking us for having him and Lt. Gov. (Zone 7) John to our Dinner Meeting on March 18th.  All agreed we enjoyed having them.
bulletWe will not have a Dinner Meeting this month because we have the two Oratorical Contests.  The next Board Meeting will be at Virginia and Bert Boline's home on May 6th starting at 7:00 PM.

After the meeting on April 1st, President Barbara received a call from Pam Bowman, Chairwoman for the District's Essay Contest, letting her know that our Club's contestant, Ms. Sarah Rice, won the District's Essay Contest.  Congratulations to Sarah; well done!

bulletThere will be no Dinner/Social Meeting in April because we are having the Oratorical Contests then.
